Azolla — The Backyard Green Supplement Small Dairies Are Trying
14 Jul 2026 • Falah Enterprises
Azolla is a tiny floating water fern that grows remarkably fast in shallow pits and has become popular with small dairy farmers as a home-grown green supplement. Here's an honest look — what it offers, how it's done, and what it won't do.
Why the interest
Azolla is protein-rich for a green feed and doubles quickly under good conditions. For a family with one or two animals and little land, a few square metres of pit can produce a daily basket of fresh green material through the warm months — at almost no running cost.
The basic setup
- A shallow pit — commonly around 2 × 2 metres and 20–30 cm deep — lined with a plastic sheet.
- A layer of sieved soil at the bottom, mixed with a little cow dung slurry as the nutrient base; topped with water.
- Fresh azolla culture spread on the surface; partial shade protects it from harsh midday sun.
- A portion is skimmed off regularly once the mat thickens, and a little dung slurry added every week or two keeps it growing.
The culture slows sharply in cold weather — in Kashmir, treat it as a warm-season project, not a winter solution.
Feeding it right
Rinse the harvested azolla well (it grows on a dung-fed pit — wash it), then mix it with regular feed rather than offering it alone; some animals take a few days to accept the taste. Introduce gradually, like any new feed.
The honest part
Azolla is a supplement, not a substitute. The daily basket from a small pit is a useful green top-up — but its fresh weight is mostly water, so in dry-matter terms it's a modest addition. It does not replace fodder bulk, and it does not replace measured compound feed for a milking animal, whose energy needs are far beyond what any backyard pit can supply. Claims that azolla alone dramatically raises milk yield deserve healthy skepticism.
Verdict
Worth trying if you have the space and water: low cost, good learning, real (if modest) nutrition. Just place it correctly in your feeding plan — as the garnish, not the meal.
