Buying Feed? A 60-Second Checklist Before the Bag Goes on the Scooter
25 Jul 2026 • Falah Enterprises
Most feed problems blamed on brands are actually storage and stock-age problems somewhere along the chain. A sixty-second check at purchase protects you better than any complaint afterwards.
Check the date
Every legitimate feed bag carries a manufacture date. Compound feed is best fed reasonably fresh — its vitamins fade and fats age with months and heat. Prefer recent stock, and be more date-strict in summer, when age hits feed hardest. A shop that moves fast stock is your quiet quality guarantee; slow, dusty piles are not.
Read the bag itself
- Intact stitching and no repairs: a re-stitched or patched bag has a history you don't know.
- No damp patches, stains or stiff caked corners — signs it sat somewhere wet.
- Print quality and details: genuine bags carry clear brand printing, batch/date information and the maker's details. Faded, smudged or oddly generic printing on a "big brand" bag deserves suspicion — feed brands do get imitated.
Trust your nose and fingers
Ask to sample from an open bag of the same lot if available. Fresh feed smells pleasant — grainy, slightly sweet. Musty, sour, oily-rancid or chemical smells are disqualifying. Pellets should feel firm and mostly whole; a bag that's half powder took a beating or aged badly. Mash feed should run loose through the fingers — clumps mean moisture got in.
Watch the storage you're buying from
Look past the counter: are bags stacked off the floor, away from walls, out of the sun, in a dry room? The seller's godown discipline is part of what you're paying for. (It's exactly the discipline we hold ourselves to — and why we tell customers to come see the store.)
Right product, right animal
Finally, confirm the bag matches your animal's stage and yield — a top-quality bag of the wrong product is still the wrong feed. Two questions to the seller — "for how many litres?" and "for which stage?" — should get confident answers. If they can't answer, buy where they can.
Sixty seconds. That's the whole insurance policy.
