The Calving Kit — What to Keep Ready Before the Big Night
07 Aug 2026 • Falah Enterprises
Calvings keep farmer's hours, not shop hours — the big moment loves a snowy 2 AM. The difference between a calm calving and a panicked one is usually a cardboard box you packed a month earlier. Here's what belongs in it.
The box itself
Any lidded box or bucket, kept clean, dry and only for calving — not raided for daily needs. Check and restock it when the cow enters her final month, the same week you switch her onto transition feeding.
Inside the kit
- Clean towels or soft cloths (several): for drying the calf briskly if the mother is slow — rubbing also stimulates breathing.
- Soap and a nail brush: scrubbed hands and arms before any assistance is non-negotiable.
- Clean rope (soft, washed): in case controlled traction is ever needed under guidance — and only gentle, downward-arcing pulls timed with her strains; anything more is the doctor's job.
- Tincture iodine (or vet-recommended navel dip) in a small cup: the navel gets dipped soon after birth — the single cheapest infection-prevention act in dairy farming.
- Torch with charged batteries — because 2 AM.
- Old tarpaulin/thick plastic sheet: clean surface in emergencies.
- Your vet's number written on the lid — phones die; lids don't.
- A bottle and calf nipple, clean and ready: if the calf is slow to suckle, the mother's bohli still needs to reach it within the golden first two hours.
- Clean bucket reserved for warm water.
What the kit is NOT
Medicines, injections, hormones — a home calving kit is towels-and-iodine territory. Anything pharmacological around calving belongs to your veterinary doctor's judgement; well-meaning injections at calving cause real tragedies.
Know the "call now" lines
Kit or no kit, call the doctor when: the water bag appeared but no progress after a reasonable spell of straining; only tail or head-back presentations; heavy bleeding; a down cow that can't rise; or a placenta still hanging after about a day. The kit handles normal; the phone handles abnormal.
Pack the box this week — the pre-calving month is also exactly when her transition feeding should begin, so let one preparation remind you of the other. Our pre-calving feed guide covers that half.
