Cattle Insurance — Boring Paperwork, Until the Worst Morning

A good milking animal is capital — often the biggest single asset a rural household owns after land. We insure scooters worth less without a second thought, yet the animal earning the family's daily income usually stands uninsured. One bad morning is all it takes to understand why that's backwards.

What livestock insurance is

A yearly premium — typically a small percentage of the animal's assessed value — against the animal's death from the covered causes (commonly disease and accident, per the policy's terms). Schemes and insurers vary — banks financing animal purchase often arrange cover as part of the loan, and government-supported livestock schemes periodically subsidise premiums — so the practical first step is asking your veterinary doctor, bank branch or animal husbandry office what's currently active locally, rather than assuming.

How the process usually runs

  • Valuation and health check by a veterinarian — the doctor's certificate anchors the animal's insured value.
  • Identification — the famous ear tag. The insured animal is tagged, and here is the rule every insured farmer must burn in: the tag is the policy. Guard it, check it at grooming, and if it falls or tears out, inform the insurer immediately for re-tagging — a claim on an untagged animal is a lost claim, however genuine.
  • Paper matters: keep policy, receipts and the vet certificate together where the household can find them without you.

The claim habits that pay

Claims fail on process more than on honesty. If the worst happens: inform the insurer at once (note their timelines), call the veterinary doctor for the required examination/post-mortem certificate, photograph what you're asked to, and don't dispose of the animal before the formalities the policy requires. Grief and paperwork are a cruel pairing — which is exactly why knowing the steps beforehand is part of the protection.

The honest cost-benefit

Premium on a valuable animal is real money — and it buys the one thing feeding and care can't: protection from the loss that arrives anyway. Insure the high-value animals first (the champion cow, the loan-purchased buffalo), then widen as budget allows. Prevention (vaccination, feeding, care) lowers the odds; insurance handles the odds that remain.

Ask about it this month — before the season, not after the loss.

For the prevention half — feeding that keeps animals off the claims list — call or WhatsApp Falah Enterprises, Authorized GOKA Feeds Distributor, Anantnag.
