Why Every Feed Change Needs a Week — The Invisible Herd in the Stomach

Change your own dinner completely tonight and you'll feel it by morning. Now imagine your dinner was digested not by you, but by billions of microbes that each specialise in one dish — and you just fired the whole kitchen overnight. That's what a sudden feed change does to a cow.

The invisible herd

A ruminant doesn't digest feed directly; her rumen microbes ferment it and she lives on the results. Those microbe populations are specialised — the mix that thrives on dry straw is different from the mix that handles lush green, which is different again from the grain-fermenting community. When the feed changes, the old specialists starve and new ones must multiply — and multiplying takes days.

What the gap looks like

In the days between old microbes fading and new ones establishing, digestion runs badly:

  • Loose or shifting dung
  • Reduced appetite and less cud chewing
  • A visible milk dip
  • In sharper switches (especially toward grain or lush fodder), real digestive illness — acidosis, bloat

The frustrating part: farmers often judge the new feed by this transition chaos — "I tried that brand, milk dropped!" — when what they actually witnessed was their own overnight switch.

The 7–10 day method

Replace the old feed a quarter at a time:

  • Days 1–3: 75% old, 25% new
  • Days 4–6: half and half
  • Days 7–9: 25% old, 75% new
  • Day 10: fully switched

Watch dung and appetite as you go — if either wobbles, hold the current mix a couple of extra days before the next step. The same principle applies to fodder shifts (straw season → green season and back), not just bag feed. And when a new season's fodder arrives, phase it in alongside the old rather than swapping the manger's contents in one proud day.

The bonus

Animals transitioned gently often end up eating more of the new feed sooner, because appetite never crashed. The week you "lose" to gradual mixing, you recover in steady milk.

The microbes can't be rushed. Respect the kitchen staff.
