Cottonseed Cake (Binola Khal) — The Milk-Fat Favourite, With Its Rules
20 Jul 2026 • Falah Enterprises
Among traditional oilcakes, binola (cottonseed) khal carries a special reputation: farmers prize it for supporting milk fat, and buffalo keepers in particular swear by it. The reputation has a real basis — and real rules.
Why it's valued
Cottonseed cake is protein-rich, and cottonseed's oil and fibre character make it a traditional favourite where thick, high-fat milk is the goal. Animals generally relish it, and in many dairy belts it's the benchmark khal against which others are judged.
The rules that come with it
- Moderation, always. Like all oilcakes, binola is a concentrated component — commonly fed in modest daily amounts (on the order of a kilogram, give or take, for an adult animal), split across feedings, alongside fodder. It is not a stand-alone diet.
- Quality check every bag. Oilcakes spoil: mould on cottonseed products is particularly dangerous because it can carry potent toxins that pass into the animal — and into milk. Musty smell, clumps, discolouration = reject. Buy fresh, store bone-dry, use quickly.
- Keep it away from young calves. Cottonseed contains a natural compound (gossypol) that mature ruminants handle in moderate amounts but young calves handle poorly. Calf diets should be built on proper calf starter feed, not household khal.
- Whole cottonseed vs cake: where whole binola seed is fed, the same moderation-and-quality rules apply even more strongly.
The balanced view
Binola brings protein and its fat-friendly character; it does not bring balanced minerals, vitamins, or the full energy profile a high-yielding animal needs. The strongest practical pattern remains: a formulated compound feed as the measured production base, with binola as the traditional extra where fresh supply and price make sense — particularly for buffalo households chasing fat.
And remember the bigger truth about milk fat: it is made mostly from fibre digestion. No khal can rescue fat percentage if the animal is short on quality fodder. Binola tops up a good ration; it cannot substitute for one.
Respect the old favourite, follow its rules, and it earns its keep.
