The Dairy Farm Medicine Shelf — What to Keep, and What Needs a Vet

Good feeding is the foundation of a healthy animal — but even the best-fed cow will, at some point, need a dewormer, a mineral top-up, or first aid for a small wound. And when that moment comes at 9pm, a two-hour round trip to the chemist is the last thing you need.

Most small farms sit at one of two extremes. Some keep nothing at all, and lose a day of milk every time something minor comes up. Others keep a shoebox of half-used bottles with no labels and no expiry dates — which is arguably worse. This is the honest middle: a small, sensible shelf for prevention and first response, nothing more.

The rule that comes before everything

This shelf is not for playing doctor. It is for the routine, predictable things — a scheduled deworming, a calcium support around calving, a scratch that needs cleaning. The moment an animal is genuinely sick — off her feed for more than a feed or two, a high fever, a swollen quarter, a difficult calving, a downer cow, blood where it should not be — that is a phone call to the veterinary doctor, not a guess from the shelf. Keeping medicines at home should make you quicker to act on small things, never slower to call for big ones.

What is genuinely worth keeping

Think in categories, not brands. Here is what earns its place on a small dairy shelf in Kashmir:

1. A dewormer. Internal parasites quietly drain condition, appetite and milk long before you see anything obvious. A dewormer kept on hand lets you follow a proper schedule instead of "whenever I remember." (See our post on deworming and nutrition for timing.)

2. External parasite (tick/lice) control. Ticks are a blood tax and a disease carrier. A shed routine plus an on-animal treatment keeps the load down through the warm months.

3. Mineral mixture and calcium support. A daily mineral mixture is the third pillar of nutrition after feed and fodder. Around calving especially, calcium support is worth having ready — the window when an animal needs it is short.

4. A multivitamin / appetite tonic. After calving, after an illness, or during a heat-stress spell, a genuine vitamin tonic helps an animal eat and bounce back. This is support, not a cure — pair it with good feed, not instead of it.

5. Basic wound care. A clean antiseptic and cotton handle 90% of the small cuts, rope burns and minor injuries that otherwise turn septic in a dirty shed.

6. Calf scour electrolytes (ORS). For a young calf, dehydration from scour kills faster than the scour itself. A sachet of electrolytes bought and stored before you need it can save a calf's life while you arrange a vet.

What you should never keep as "self-medicine"

Some things belong only in a veterinary doctor's hands: antibiotics, oxytocin, steroids, and anything aimed at a genuinely sick animal. Guessing an antibiotic — wrong drug, wrong dose, stopped too early — breeds resistance and can leave residues in milk. Retained placenta, repeat breeding, a persistent fever or a sudden drop in yield are diagnoses, not shelf items. Buy the routine things; call the professional for the rest.

Two habits that make the shelf actually work

  • Respect milk withdrawal. Many medicines require that milk be discarded for a set period after treatment. This protects your customers and your reputation — read milk withdrawal after medicines and follow the label every time.
  • Store it properly. Cool, dry, out of sunlight and out of children's reach. Write the opening date on the bottle, and clear out anything past its expiry — an expired medicine is not a saving, it is a risk.

Where we fit in

Alongside GOKA feed, Falah Enterprises now stocks a genuine veterinary and cattle-health range — dewormers, tick control, mineral mixture, calcium and post-calving support, and vitamin tonics — the exact categories above. Everything is billed properly and priced at or below MRP, and for anything serious we will tell you honestly to see a veterinary doctor rather than sell you a bottle. That is the point of a good supplier: not to replace your vet, but to make sure the routine things are always within reach.

Get the feeding right first — our free Feed Calculator matches a GOKA feed to your animal's yield and stage in under a minute — and let a small, sensible medicine shelf be the backup, not the plan.
