Dry Matter — The One Feeding Concept That Explains Almost Everything

Here's a question that confuses many good farmers: if green fodder is so nutritious, why can't a high-yielding cow live on green fodder alone, even when she eats a huge pile of it?

The answer is one concept: dry matter.

Water is not nutrition

Fresh green fodder is mostly water — often around three-quarters or more of its weight. When a cow eats 10 kg of lush green grass, she may be getting only 2–3 kg of actual feed material; the rest is water passing through. Dry fodder like hay or straw is the opposite — most of its weight is real feed material.

This is why animals fed on lush green fodder alone can look full but still be underfed: their stomach fills up before their nutrition needs are met.

The stomach has a size limit

A cow can only eat so many kilograms of material per day. If most of that allowance is spent on water-heavy fodder, there simply isn't room left to swallow enough nutrients for high milk production. The higher an animal's yield, the harder it becomes to meet her needs with bulky, watery feeds — her requirement grows but her stomach doesn't.

Why concentrate feed exists at all

Compound feed is, in effect, concentrated dry matter: high nutrition packed into low bulk. That's the entire logic of the standard feeding rule — fodder provides the fibre base, while measured compound feed tops up the energy and protein that fodder alone can't fit into the animal's daily eating capacity. Neither replaces the other; they solve opposite problems.

Practical takeaways

  • Don't judge feeding by the size of the green pile — judge it by the animal's yield, body condition and dung.
  • When fodder is very lush and watery (early spring flushes), animals may need more supplement, not less, despite the abundance.
  • When only dry straw is available (deep winter), the bulk problem reverses: straw fills the stomach with low-nutrition material, so the measured concentrate becomes even more important.
  • Sudden swings between watery and dry fodder change how much real feed the animal is getting even when "kilograms" look the same — adjust gradually and watch the dung.

Once you start thinking in dry matter instead of wet kilograms, most feeding puzzles — "she eats so much but gives so little" — solve themselves.
