From Dung Heap to Compost — The Farm's Most Ignored Product

Every dairy shed produces two harvests daily: milk you carefully measure, and dung you toss on a heap and forget. That second harvest, handled with the smallest intention, becomes serious fertility for your fields — or a small income line. Handled with none, it becomes a fly nursery that leaks away its value in sun and rain.

Heap versus compost

A raw dung pile loses nutrition daily — sun bakes off nitrogen, rain washes the goodness into one lucky patch of weeds, flies breed in the wet fringe. Composting is just organising the same material so it cooks itself: microbes heat the pile, weed seeds and fly eggs die in the warmth, and the result is dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling khaad that crops respond to visibly.

The simple method

  • Site: shaded corner, slightly raised or on packed ground, away from the shed and the water source.
  • Build in layers: dung mixed with the shed's other output — soiled bedding, waste fodder, chopped dry plant material. The dry matter is not contamination; it's the recipe — dung alone is too wet and airless to cook.
  • Moisture like a wrung sponge: damp throughout, never waterlogged. Cover the heap (old tarpaulin, thatch, or a soil plaster) against both baking sun and soaking rain — the cover is half the quality.
  • Turn it a few times: every few weeks, fork the heap over so outsides get their turn inside. Turning is what separates months-long rotting from a properly cooked heap; a well-managed pile is ready in roughly three to five months.
  • Two-pit rhythm: one pit filling, one pit cooking — so there's always a "today" heap and a "maturing" heap, and ripe compost isn't buried under fresh dung.

What it's worth

Spread on your own fodder plot, good compost feeds the very crop that feeds the animals — closing the loop and cutting fertiliser spend. Beyond your own fields, well-made compost and even dry dung cakes have steady local demand; several careful households quietly fund their mineral-mixture and salt budget entirely from the manure corner.

Milk pays the bills; muck pays the extras — but only if you stop treating it as waste.
