Storing Feed at Home — Six Rules That Protect Every Rupee in the Bag

You paid full price for that bag of feed. Whether your animal receives full value depends on what happens between your purchase and the last scoop — because feed doesn't stay good by itself. Six rules cover almost everything.

1. Off the floor, always

Bags on a bare floor drink moisture from below — the bottom third cakes, clumps and moulds while the top looks fine. Wooden planks, a pallet, even a layer of bricks under a plastic sheet: anything that puts air between bag and floor.

2. Away from the wall

Walls sweat, especially in winter and rainy spells. Leave a hand's gap between stacks and the wall so air moves and you can spot trouble (and rat runs) early.

3. Dry beats everything

Moisture is the enemy — it feeds mould, and mouldy feed harms appetite, immunity and worse. Choose the driest corner you have, keep bags closed or folded tight after opening, and never scoop with a wet or dung-soiled hand or mug. If a batch smells musty or shows clumping, stop feeding it.

4. War on rats

Rats eat surprisingly little feed — but they spoil a great deal with droppings and urine, and they chew holes that let moisture in. Sealed bins or drums for opened bags are the single best upgrade a small dairy can make. Keep the store swept; spilled feed is a rat invitation.

5. First in, first out

New delivery goes behind the old stock, and you always feed from the oldest bag. It sounds trivial; in practice, most spoiled feed in home stores is simply a forgotten bag that got buried. Check manufacture dates when buying and prefer recent stock — compound feed is at its best fed fresh, within a few months of manufacture.

6. Cool and shaded

Direct sun through a window bakes bags, degrading vitamins and turning any fat rancid faster. Shade is free; use it.

None of this costs real money — planks, a drum, a habit of rotation. Compare that with the cost of even one 50 kg bag lost to damp, and the six rules pay for themselves the first season.
