How Much Fodder Land Per Animal? Planning Backwards From the Manger

"Can my land feed my animals?" is the most fundamental planning question in dairy — and most of us answer it by feel, discovering the truth in February when the stack runs low. Here's how to answer it with arithmetic instead.

Start from the animal's appetite

A rough working figure: an adult milking animal happily eats 25–35 kg of green fodder a day when green is the bulk of the ration, or correspondingly less green plus dry fodder in mixed seasons. Over a hundred-day green season, one animal is a matter of tonnes, not trolley-loads — writing that number down is the moment planning becomes real.

What land yields

Yields swing hugely with crop, soil, water and care — a well-watered, well-manured fodder plot can yield several times a casual one. Rather than trusting a book figure, run one honest local test: weigh what one marked patch of your own field yields per cutting, multiply by cuttings, and scale. The Kashmir-specific twist: the winter wall

Valley planning isn't "land ÷ animals" — it's two seasons. Land that feeds animals generously from April to October contributes nothing in January unless part of its produce was stored: hay made in the surplus flush, straw stacked at harvest, willow lopped and dried. So split the plan:

• Green months: daily cut-and-carry from the fodder plot.
• Storage target: enough hay/straw tonnage banked by November to cover roughly five months of dry feeding — count it in stacked weight, not hope.

When land falls short

Most households' land does fall short of the full arithmetic — that's normal, not failure. The gap closes with purchased dry fodder (bought early, when cheap), tree fodder, and measured compound feed, which concentrates nutrition precisely so that limited fodder bulk can still support real production. Knowing your gap in advance turns panic-buying into planned buying.
