How to Judge Dry Fodder (Bhusa/Hay) Before You Buy It

Every autumn, Kashmiri farmers spend serious money stocking dry fodder for the long winter. Yet most of us judge a trolley of bhusa in ten seconds — by price. Here's the ten-minute inspection that protects both your money and your animals.

Use your eyes

  • Colour: good hay keeps a greenish tint; good straw is bright golden. Dull grey, brown or blackened patches mean rain damage or poor storage — nutrition is already lost.
  • Leaf vs stem: in hay, leaves carry most of the nutrition. Fodder that is all thick stems with the leaf shattered away is closer to bedding than feed.
  • Foreign material: watch for soil clumps, stones, plastic scraps and weeds. A load with visible rubbish outside usually hides more inside.

Use your nose

Good dry fodder smells clean and faintly sweet. A musty, damp or "old room" smell is the single most important warning — it means mould, and mouldy fodder can quietly harm digestion, immunity and even pregnancy. If a flake pulled from the middle of a bale smells musty or releases a puff of grey dust, walk away, whatever the price.

Use your hands

  • Twist a handful: properly dried fodder crackles and feels crisp. A cool, soft, damp feel means it was baled with too much moisture — such stacks heat up and mould from the inside.
  • Reach inside the stack or bale, not just the outer layer. Sellers naturally present the best face outward; the middle tells the truth.

The dust test

Drop a section from waist height onto a clean surface. A visible cloud of grey dust is mould spores and soil, not "just dust" — bad for the animal's lungs and yours. A little golden chaff is normal; a grey cloud is not.

Price per kilogram of feeding value

A cheaper load that is dusty, stemmy and part-spoiled often costs more per kilogram of actual usable feed than a cleaner load at a higher rate. And remember dry fodder is the bulk half of the ration — the quality of what fills your animal's stomach all winter decides how well your measured compound feed can do its job on top.

Ten minutes of eyes, nose and hands before you pay — that's the whole skill. Your winter milk depends on it.
