Mineral Mixture — The Third Pillar Most Rations Are Missing

Ask what a cow eats and you'll hear two words: chara and dana. But a complete ration stands on three pillars, and the third — the humble mineral mixture — is the one most Kashmiri sheds skip. Its absence never shouts; it whispers, through problems nobody connects to it.

What minerals quietly run

Calcium and phosphorus build bone and pour into every litre of milk; salt drives appetite and thirst; trace elements like zinc, copper, iodine and cobalt sit inside fertility hormones, immunity, hoof and skin health. An animal short on them doesn't collapse — she underperforms: comes into heat late or silently, conceives reluctantly, milks below her breeding, throws weaker calves, licks soil and walls searching for what the trough didn't supply.

Notice that list — it overlaps suspiciously with half the complaints in dairy farming. That's not coincidence; mineral hunger wears many masks.

Why fodder can't cover it

Fodder minerals mirror soil minerals, and crop after crop from the same land runs the account down. Straw — the winter backbone — is particularly mineral-poor. So the animals most dependent on stored dry fodder (exactly our valley's winter situation) are the most exposed.

Feeding it right

• Daily and measured, not occasional. Minerals work like a salary, not a festival gift — the commonly advised range is on the order of 30–50 grams per adult animal daily (follow the pack and your vet's advice), mixed into moistened feed so it can't be sorted out and left.
• Everyone, not just milkers: pregnant animals (a calf's skeleton is being built), growing heifers, and breeding-age animals arguably need it most.
• Buy a reputable branded mixture with its composition printed — loose unlabeled powder of unknown content is a poor place to economise.
• Note: a good compound feed already carries formulated minerals — one reason compound-fed animals show fewer of these gaps. The mixture tops up the fodder half of the diet; the two together close the circle.

Of the three pillars, the mineral mixture is the cheapest by far — a few rupees a day insuring the performance of everything else you spend.
