Common Myths About Compound Cattle Feed, Busted

Compound feed carries a lot of misconceptions, some old, some new. Here are the most common ones we hear, addressed directly.

Myth: "Compound feed makes animals dependent and they can't eat fodder anymore"

Not true. Compound feed is meant to work alongside fodder, not replace it — fibre from fodder remains essential for rumen health regardless of how much compound feed is fed. Animals don't lose the ability to digest fodder; the two are complementary, not competing.

Myth: "More feed always means more milk"

Not quite — there's a point of diminishing returns, and overfeeding without matching an animal's actual capacity wastes money without proportional milk gain. Matching quantity to yield (1 kg per 2.5 litres of milk, plus 1 kg maintenance) gets better results than simply feeding more.

Myth: "Homemade feed is always cheaper"

Per kilogram, sometimes yes. Per litre of milk produced, often no — see our detailed breakdown in The Real Cost of Cheap Feed vs Quality Feed. Unbalanced homemade rations frequently require more total feed to achieve the same milk output.

Myth: "All compound feeds are basically the same"

Formulation quality varies significantly between brands and even between batches from less consistent manufacturers. Crude protein, TDN and mineral content differences directly affect results — read the label, not just the price.

Myth: "Compound feed causes infertility or health problems"

Properly formulated, correctly-fed compound feed does not cause these issues — in fact, adequate nutrition (including compound feed matched to yield) is one of the most effective tools for supporting fertility. Problems more often arise from incorrect feeding patterns (sudden changes, wrong quantities) than from compound feed itself.

Myth: "Once you start compound feed, you can never stop"

Feed can be adjusted or changed at any point in an animal's life — the key is always making transitions gradual (7-10 days) rather than abrupt, whether starting, stopping or switching.
