The Two-Week Rule — Why Every New Animal Stays Separate First

The most dangerous animal in any shed is the newest one — not through any fault of its own, but because it arrives carrying the invisible history of another farm, another market, another truck. One fortnight of separation is the cheapest insurance in livestock keeping, and almost nobody practices it.

Why healthy-looking isn't safe

Diseases have incubation periods — an animal can be infected at the market on Saturday and look perfectly well for one, two, even three weeks before showing anything. Skin troubles, foot infections and parasites travel quietly too. The seller may be honest; the animal itself doesn't know what it's carrying. Two weeks of separation lets hidden problems show themselves in one animal instead of the whole herd.

What separation actually means

• Distance and no shared surfaces: a separate corner, pen or tethering spot — ideally not nose-to-nose with the herd and not up-slope so its washings drain toward others.
• Separate bucket, trough and rope for the fortnight — the equipment is a germ-bridge as real as touch.
• Care order: handle and milk the newcomer last, after your own animals, washing hands after. If you must go newcomer-first, wash and change between.
• Daily observation with intent: appetite, dung, temperature if in doubt, skin and feet, and the udder if in milk. You're not just waiting — you're watching.

Use the fortnight well

Quarantine is also the perfect settling window:

• Deworm and complete due vaccinations per your veterinary doctor's advice — the separate fortnight is exactly when this is easiest.
• Transition feeding calmly: the animal arrives on someone else's ration and stress. Start simple — good fodder, water, modest concentrate — and shift gradually onto your regular feed over the fortnight, so digestion and quarantine finish together.
• Tick-check thoroughly in week one; treat if needed while it can't seed your shed.

When the fortnight ends

If appetite, dung, skin, feet and udder have stayed normal for the full stretch, introduce the animal to the herd — ideally across a fence first, then together under observation, at a calm time of day.
