Why Milk Output Does Not Depend on Feed Alone: Lessons From a Recent Dairy Farm Visit

At Falah Enterprises , we regularly interact with dairy farmers, retailers, and farm owners. Our aim is not just to provide quality feed, but also to understand the real problems farmers face inside their farms.

Recently, during a visit to a dairy farm, we observed something very important. The animals were using our feed, and the farmer shared that body weight had improved and milk production had increased in some animals. But in some animals, the milk response was not as expected.

When we entered the shed, the first thing we noticed was poor ventilation. The air felt heavy and suffocating. Within a short time, even our eyes started feeling uncomfortable. This was a clear sign that the shed environment was not healthy enough — not only for humans, but especially for the animals living there throughout the day and night.

The second major observation was related to diet. The animals were getting concentrate feed, but green fodder was not being provided properly. This is a common issue in many farms, especially where farmers depend mostly on dry fodder and concentrate.

This visit reminded us of one important truth:

Good feed is important, but feed alone cannot give the best results if ventilation, fodder, water, and farm management are not proper.

1. Poor Ventilation Can Reduce Dairy Farm Output

Ventilation is one of the most ignored parts of dairy farming. Many farmers focus on feed, medicine, and breed, but forget that the animal spends most of its life inside the shed.

If the shed has poor airflow, the air becomes heavy due to:

  • Heat
  • Humidity
  • Ammonia smell from urine and manure
  • Dust
  • Wet bedding
  • Lack of fresh oxygen

When we entered the farm, the suffocation and eye discomfort were easy to feel. Now imagine the condition of cows and buffaloes who stay in that environment for hours every day.

Poor ventilation can affect animals in many ways:

  • Animals eat less
  • Milk production may drop
  • Digestion becomes weaker
  • Breathing problems can increase
  • Stress level increases
  • Fertility may be affected
  • Risk of disease can increase
  • Animals may not rest properly

A comfortable animal eats better, digests better, and produces better. If the shed is hot, humid, and poorly ventilated, even the best feed may not show its full result.

2. No Green Fodder Means the Rumen May Not Work Properly

The second issue we observed was the lack of green fodder. Concentrate feed is important, but dairy animals are ruminants. Their stomach system needs proper roughage and fibre.

Green fodder, dry fodder, hay, silage, and other roughage sources help the animal in:

  • Proper rumination
  • Better digestion
  • Better saliva production
  • Maintaining rumen health
  • Supporting milk fat
  • Improving feed utilization
  • Keeping dung consistency normal

If an animal is getting only concentrate feed and poor-quality dry fodder, the milk response may not be stable. Some animals may gain weight, but milk production may not increase equally in all animals.

This is because milk production depends on a balanced system:

Concentrate feed + green fodder/roughage + clean water + comfort + health = better milk output

Feed provides nutrition, but the rumen must be healthy enough to use that nutrition properly.

3. Why Some Animals Respond and Some Do Not

In the farm we visited, some animals showed improvement in milk, while some did not. This is normal when farm conditions are not balanced.

Different animals respond differently because of:

  • Stage of lactation
  • Breed and genetics
  • Body condition
  • Previous feeding history
  • Health status
  • Ventilation and comfort
  • Water intake
  • Quality of fodder
  • Stress level
  • Pregnancy or fertility condition

So, when milk does not increase in all animals, it does not always mean the feed is not working. Sometimes the real issue is hidden in the farm environment or ration balance.

For example, if a cow is under heat stress, breathing bad air, not getting enough fibre, or not drinking enough water, her milk output will not reach full potential.

4. Feed Works Best When Farm Management Supports It

At Falah Enterprises, we believe that selling feed is only one part of our responsibility. Farmers also need awareness about how to get the best result from feed.

A good feed can support:

  • Milk production
  • Body condition
  • Fat and SNF
  • Digestion
  • Growth
  • Reproduction
  • Overall health

But for best results, the farmer must also focus on:

  • Proper ventilation
  • Green fodder or good roughage
  • Clean drinking water
  • Dry and clean bedding
  • Regular deworming and vaccination
  • Proper feeding quantity
  • Disease monitoring
  • Comfortable shed space

When all these things work together, the result becomes much better.

5. Simple Ventilation Improvements Farmers Can Start With

Farmers do not always need expensive changes. Even simple improvements can make a big difference.

Here are some basic steps:

  • Keep windows and side openings clear
  • Allow cross-ventilation from one side to another
  • Remove manure regularly
  • Keep bedding dry
  • Avoid overcrowding
  • Use fans where required
  • Keep roof height and airflow in mind
  • Do not block air movement with plastic sheets or unnecessary walls
  • Check if there is ammonia smell inside the shed
  • If human eyes feel irritation, the animal is also suffering

A good dairy shed should feel fresh, not suffocating.

6. Simple Diet Improvements for Better Output

Along with concentrate feed, animals need a proper roughage plan.

Farmers should try to provide:

  • Green fodder where available
  • Good-quality dry fodder
  • Chaffed fodder for better intake
  • Clean drinking water at all times
  • Balanced concentrate feed according to milk production
  • Mineral mixture if advised
  • Gradual diet changes, not sudden changes

If green fodder is not available, then the farmer should plan alternative roughage sources like hay, silage, or good-quality dry fodder.

A sudden increase in concentrate without proper roughage can disturb digestion. So the aim should be balance, not just quantity.

7. Our Message to Dairy Farmers

From this farm visit, we learned and confirmed one important thing:

Milk production is not dependent on feed alone. It is the result of total farm management.

If your animal is eating good feed but still not giving expected milk, check these things first:

  • Is the shed airy and comfortable?
  • Is there any ammonia smell?
  • Is the animal getting green fodder or proper roughage?
  • Is clean water available all the time?
  • Is the animal ruminating properly?
  • Is dung normal?
  • Is the animal under stress?
  • Is there any hidden disease?

Before blaming feed, breed, or the animal, we must look at the full farm system.

Final Thought

Our recent dairy farm visit was a good reminder that dairy farming is a complete system. Feed is a very important part of that system, but ventilation and fodder management are equally important.

At Falah Enterprises, our goal is to help farmers get better results through quality feed and practical awareness.

Healthy shed, balanced diet, clean water, and proper feed — together they create better milk output.

For dairy farmers, the message is simple:

Do not focus only on what the animal eats. Also focus on where the animal lives and how comfortable it feels.
