Soybean Meal and Groundnut Cake — Protein Sources Compared
12 Oct 2026 • Falah Enterprises
Protein is the expensive part of a ration and the part most home mixes get wrong. Farmers in the valley have used mustard cake for generations; the shops now also stock soybean meal, groundnut cake and cottonseed cake. Here is how they compare, plainly.
Soybean meal
The highest protein of the lot, around 44-48%, with a quality of protein that suits milk production well. Low in oil, stores well, and is safe for all classes of stock including calves. Its only drawback is price. For a high-yielding cow it is the protein that performs.
Groundnut cake
Also high in protein, around 40-45%, palatable and energy-rich because of its oil. Its serious weakness is aflatoxin: groundnut stored damp grows a mould that produces a toxin which damages the liver, suppresses immunity, and passes into milk. Buy only fresh, dry, sweet-smelling cake from a reliable source, store it dry, and never feed cake that smells musty or shows any grey-green tinge. Not for calves.
Mustard cake
Around 32-36% protein, cheap and local. It carries a pungent compound that reduces palatability and, in large amounts, affects the thyroid; keep it to about a kilo a day for an adult cow and introduce it gradually. Our earlier post on using sarson khal correctly covers the details.
Cottonseed cake
Around 22-28% protein in the undecorticated form, popular for lifting milk fat. It carries gossypol, which is toxic to calves and young stock and to animals fed large amounts over long periods. Adults tolerate a kilo or so a day; calves under six months should not get it.
What matters more than which cake
- Balance: protein without matching energy is wasted, and energy without protein makes fat, not milk.
- Minerals and vitamins: no cake carries them.
- Consistency: a ration that changes with the week's prices upsets the rumen every time.
This is the whole case for a compound feed: GOKA Star, Challenger 8000 or Gold 10000+ already carry the protein, energy, mineral and vitamin balance for their milk band, from the same proven ingredients, at a steady recipe. A farmer who likes to use a local cake can still add a measured kilo beside it. A farmer trying to build the whole ration from cakes and brans is doing the feed company's job with a hand scale and a guess.
