Salt for Cattle — Small Habit, Surprising Reach

Watch an animal work at a salt lick with total concentration and you're watching real hunger — for the one mineral no fodder supplies in enough quantity. Salt is the oldest supplement in animal keeping, and it still earns its place daily.

What salt actually drives

• Appetite. Sodium is tied to appetite itself — chronically salt-short animals eat with less enthusiasm across the board, which quietly caps everything else.
• Thirst and milk. Salt makes animals drink properly, and water intake is a hard ceiling on milk. The salt–water–milk chain is short and direct.
• The body's electrics. Nerves, muscles and digestion all run on sodium chemistry; sweat and every litre of milk carry salt out, so it must come back in daily.

A salt-hungry animal advertises it: licking walls, soil, urine patches, other animals' coats — the same pica story minerals tell, with salt the most common single culprit.

How much and how

For an adult cow or buffalo, common guidance lands around 25–50 grams of salt daily, scaled with size and milk (heavy milkers export more salt in the pail). Two solid ways to deliver it:

• Loose, in the feed: measured into the daily moistened concentrate — sure and even; the usual choice for tied animals.
• A salt lick block fixed near (not inside) the water point lets each animal top up to its own need — self-service that works well alongside a smaller loose ration. Keep blocks off the wet floor on a holder, and out of rain, which melts money.

Note that both branded mineral mixtures and compound feeds already include salt in their formulation — so "extra" salt should be modest where those are properly fed, not stacked on top by the handful.

The cautions

Salt safety is really water safety: salt with unlimited clean water is safe across a wide range; salt with restricted or frozen water is how trouble happens. Never let salt-hungry animals binge on a newly found source; introduce licks calmly. And plain white salt is for the trough — fertiliser-grade or treated industrial salts are not feed.

Cheap, ancient, and still pulling its weight — make sure your shed's salt is a system, not an occasional pinch.
