The 7-Step Clean Milking Routine — Ten Extra Minutes, Every Day's Best Investment

Milking is the one job you do twice a day, every day, forever — so any small improvement in how you milk gets multiplied seven hundred times a year. Here is the routine that protects the udder from infection and the milk from rejection.

Before you touch the animal

1. Clean hands, short nails. Wash with soap up to the elbows. Hands carry mastitis germs from one animal's udder to the next — the milker's hands are the number one bridge.

2. Calm setting, fixed time. Same time, same place, same order of animals. A calm cow lets her milk down fully; a startled one holds it back — and held-back milk is both lost yield and an udder-health risk.

Prepare the udder

3. Wash only what's needed, then DRY. Clean the teats with clean water (add a mild, vet-approved udder wash if you use one) — and here's the step most skip: dry the teats with a clean cloth. Milking wet teats washes dirty water straight down into the milk and over the teat opening. One clean towel per session; ideally per animal.

4. First streams to a dark cup, not the floor. Draw the first two or three squirts from each teat into a dark surface and look — clots, flakes or watery milk are your earliest mastitis alarm. Squirting them on the floor both wastes the check and seeds germs into the bedding.

The milking itself

5. Full hand, steady rhythm, complete emptying. Milk with the whole hand (not thumb-knuckle pinching, which injures teats), keep an even rhythm, and empty each quarter fully — leftover milk is an open invitation to infection and gradually teaches the udder to make less.

Afterwards

6. Keep her standing 20–30 minutes. The teat opening stays relaxed after milking; a cow that lies straight down in dung presses germs into that open door. Fresh feed in the trough right after milking keeps her on her feet naturally.

7. Milk out of the shed fast, covered. Strain it, cover it, move it to the coolest spot — warm open milk sours by the hour in summer.

None of these steps costs money. Together they're the difference between milk that fetches full price and udders that fetch vet bills.
