The Sealed-Shed Myth — Why "Warm and Closed" Makes Winter Animals Sick

Every November the same loving mistake: sacks over every opening, cracks stuffed, door shut tight — "warm" for the animals. Walk into that shed in January and your eyes sting, the walls drip, and the air smells sharp. That sting is the problem.

What builds up in a sealed shed

Animals exhale litres of moisture; dung and urine release ammonia. Sealed in, the results are:

  • Ammonia-loaded air that inflames eyes and airways — the classic route to winter coughs and calf pneumonia. If your own eyes sting at the door, the calves at floor level (where ammonia sits densest) have it worse.
  • Saturated damp air and wet walls — and damp cold chills animals more than dry cold at the same temperature, while damp bedding breeds mastitis germs.

The sealed shed isn't warm and safe; it's humid, sharp-aired and germ-friendly.

Draught vs ventilation — the actual distinction

  • Draught: cold wind blowing directly on animals at body level. Genuinely harmful — this is what deserves blocking.
  • Ventilation: steady air exchange, ideally entering high and leaving high, changing the shed's air without a wind-tunnel at cow level.

The winter recipe is draught-free but ventilated: block the body-level wind paths (broken window panes, gappy doors, holes facing the wind) while keeping high-level openings — ridge gaps, high vents, the top of a window — open even in January. Warm, moist, ammonia-laden air rises and exits on its own if you leave it a door at the top.

Two tests any morning

  1. Nose test: stepping in from fresh air, does the shed smell sharp and feel clammy? Failed — open something high.
  2. Cobweb test: hold a feather or thread at animal level in the usual spots — visible steady flutter means a draught to block.

Warmth that actually works

Deep dry bedding, animals' own considerable body heat, wind-broken (not sealed) walls, and generous feeding — a winter rumen is a furnace, and fibre digestion literally heats the animal from inside. Feed the furnace; ventilate the room.

Fresh air is not the enemy of warmth. Wet air is.

For winter feeding plans that stoke that inner furnace, call or WhatsApp Falah Enterprises, Authorized GOKA Feeds Distributor, Anantnag.
