Ticks — The Blood Tax on Your Herd, and How to Stop Collecting It
29 Jul 2026 • Falah Enterprises
A tick is a small thing; a tick problem is not. Beyond the blood they steal, ticks transmit serious blood diseases that can strike an animal down in days. Prevention is far cheaper than the treatment bill — and prevention is mostly routine, not chemicals.
Know your enemy's address
Ticks don't live on the animal full-time — they live in the shed and surroundings: wall cracks, floor crevices, under feed troughs, in old bedding, on scrub vegetation around the yard. The animal is the restaurant; the shed is the home. Any control plan that only treats the animal leaves the home untouched.
The weekly hand-check
Once a week, run your hands over each animal's favourite tick zones: inside the ears, around the eyes and dewlap, under the tail, the udder and inner thighs, between the legs. Pick off what you find (use gloves or a cloth; drop ticks into soapy water or crush on stone — never just onto the floor, where they simply reboard). Ten minutes per animal, and you also catch wounds and skin trouble early — a habit with double value.
Starve the shed
- Fill and plaster wall cracks and crevices — lime-plastering and seasonal whitewashing meaningfully reduce hiding places.
- Change bedding regularly; don't let old bedding pile in corners for months.
- Keep the immediate yard clear of tall scrub and weeds where ticks quest for hosts.
- Sun is a disinfectant: bedding and movable items spread in harsh sun get hostile to ticks.
Chemicals — with discipline
When infestations are established, veterinary acaricide sprays/pour-ons especially our tick rakshak Tick-Rakshakfor the animals and appropriate treatment of shed surfaces may both be needed — as directed by your veterinary doctor, with dairy-appropriate products and milk-withholding rules respected. Repeat treatments per instructions matter, because eggs hatch after the first round. Random single sprays teach ticks nothing except resistance.
Watch for the warning signs
An animal that's tick-loaded and then turns dull, feverish, pale-gummed or passes red/coffee-coloured urine is a same-day veterinary emergency — that's the picture of tick-borne blood disease, and hours matter.
Weekly hands, clean dry shed, sun, and a vet-guided spray when needed. That's the whole tax-avoidance scheme.
