Urea Treatment of Straw — Turning Poor Fodder Into Better Feed, Safely

Plain straw fills the stomach but feeds very little — low protein, hard to digest. Urea treatment is a long-established, extension-recommended method that meaningfully improves straw's digestibility and protein value using simple materials. Done properly it is safe and effective. Done carelessly it can harm animals — so this guide includes the safety rules as firmly as the recipe.

The standard method

The widely recommended proportions are: for every 100 kg of dry straw, dissolve about 4 kg of fertiliser-grade urea in roughly 40–50 litres of water.

  1. Spread a layer of straw on a clean floor or in a pit/box.
  2. Sprinkle the urea solution evenly using a watering can, layer by layer, so all straw is moistened.
  3. Press and pack the stack tightly to push out air.
  4. Seal it airtight — plastic sheeting weighted down, or a mud-plastered stack.
  5. Leave it sealed for about 3 weeks (a little longer in cold weather).

The trapped ammonia released from the urea softens the straw and boosts its nitrogen value. Treated straw comes out darker, softer and smelling of ammonia.

Before feeding

Open the stack and air the straw for a day or two until the sharp ammonia smell fades, then feed. Introduce it gradually over several days, mixed with normal fodder, letting animals adjust.

The safety rules — not optional

  • Never feed straw from a stack opened early or one that never sealed properly.
  • Never sprinkle dry urea directly onto feed or dissolve-and-pour at feeding time. Urea outside this controlled process can poison cattle.
  • Do not feed urea-treated straw to calves below about six months — their rumen isn't ready.
  • Store urea itself strictly out of reach of animals and children.
  • If an animal shows tremors, salivation or distress after any urea exposure, treat it as an emergency and call your veterinary doctor immediately.

Where it fits

Urea treatment upgrades the fodder base — it doesn't replace concentrate feeding for milking animals. Think of it as making the bulk half of the diet work harder, while measured compound feed still carries the production load. For a winter of straw-heavy feeding in Kashmir, that combination — treated straw plus proper concentrate — is a far better ration than either alone.

For help fitting treated straw into your animals' full winter ration, call or WhatsApp Falah Enterprises, Authorized GOKA Feeds Distributor, Anantnag.
