The Vaccination Year — Planning FMD, HS and BQ Instead of Remembering Them

Ask a farmer whether vaccination matters and everyone says yes. Ask when the next one is due for each animal and most sheds go quiet. The gap between believing in vaccination and scheduling it is where outbreaks find their victims.

The core protections

For cattle and buffaloes in most of India, the backbone vaccinations your veterinary department runs are:

  • FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease / muh-khur): typically given twice a year, often through mass campaign rounds. Painful mouth-and-foot blisters, milk crash, long recovery — and it spreads like wind through cloven-hoofed animals.
  • HS (Haemorrhagic Septicaemia / gal ghotu): classically an annual, pre-monsoon vaccination — the disease strikes fast in warm humid spells and can kill within a day.
  • BQ (Black Quarter): annual protection, commonly alongside HS timing, mainly guarding young growing cattle against a fatal muscle infection.

Beyond these, region and situation add others (brucellosis in heifer calves, theileriosis for crossbreds where prevalent, etc.) — which is exactly why the plan is made with your own veterinary doctor, not copied from a poster. Timings and products are their call; the calendar discipline is yours.

Making it a calendar, not a memory

  • One page per year: animals down the side, months across the top; mark each due month and tick when done, with date. That single page outperforms every memory in the household.
  • Ride the campaigns: when the department's FMD round comes to your area, participate — mass rounds are timed for a reason and often free. Note the date; it anchors the next due.
  • Rules of thumb: new purchases get their status rebuilt during quarantine; calves start their schedules on the doctor's advised timeline; heavily pregnant animals' timing is a vet judgement — flag them rather than defaulting.

The nutrition connection

A vaccine asks the immune system to build protection — and immune systems are built from nutrition. Well-fed animals in decent body condition respond better; a stressed, parasite-loaded, underfed animal responds poorly. Deworming on schedule and steady balanced feeding are the quiet partners that make the same injections work harder. (Our earlier piece on vaccination and nutrition covers that link in depth.)

Protection is cheap; outbreaks are not. Put the year on one page this week.
