Wheat Bran (Chokar) — What It Does Well and What It Can't Do
19 Jul 2026 • Falah Enterprises
Chokar is perhaps the most trusted feed word in any Indian dairy household. Gentle, familiar, always in the bazaar. It deserves its good name — and also an honest description of its limits.
What chokar does well
- Gentle on digestion. Bran is mildly laxative and easy on the stomach, which is why it's the traditional choice around calving and for animals recovering from illness — a warm bran mash is comfort food for cattle.
- Palatable carrier. Animals like it, and it mixes well — a handful of chokar helps carry minerals, medicines or a new feed an animal is suspicious of.
- Moderate all-rounder. It brings some protein, some energy, some fibre — respectable at everything, outstanding at nothing.
What chokar can't do
Carry a milking animal. Its nutrient density is simply too low: a cow yielding well needs more energy and protein per kilogram of stomach space than bran offers. Farmers who feed "plenty of chokar" to a good cow often see the same puzzle — animal looks content, milk stays mediocre, body condition slowly slides. The stomach is full; the requirement isn't met.
The comparison worth understanding
A formulated compound feed packs balanced protein, energy, minerals and vitamins into every kilogram — it is built to carry production. Chokar is a mild, useful supporting feed. The two aren't rivals; they have different jobs:
- Milking/pregnant animals: measured compound feed as the production base; chokar optionally as a small palatable extra or calving-time mash.
- Recovery and transition moments: chokar's gentleness shines — short-term, alongside proper feed.
- Dry animals on maintenance: modest chokar with good fodder is often adequate support.
Buying and storing
Fresh bran smells sweet and nutty. Musty smell, clumping, or webbing/insects mean it's old or damp — bran spoils faster than whole grains. Buy amounts you'll finish within a few weeks and store dry, sealed, off the floor.
Keep chokar in its rightful place — the gentle helper, not the engine — and it will never disappoint you.
