Black Quarter (BQ) — The Young Stock Killer From the Soil

Black quarter has a cruel preference: it kills the best-grown young cattle, often between six months and two years, and often the fattest of the batch. The bacteria wait in soil for years, strike muscle suddenly, and give little time to respond — which is why BQ, like HS, is an annual-vaccine disease, not a treat-in-time disease.

- Sudden severe lameness, usually one hind or fore quarter
- Hot, painful swelling of a large muscle mass — thigh, shoulder
- Swelling that later crackles under the fingers like paper (gas in the muscle)
- High fever early, then dullness and rapid collapse
- Often simply found dead — the disease can outrun observation

- Any sudden one-leg lameness with a hot muscle swelling in a young animal?
- Does the swelling crackle to the touch (report exactly this to the doctor)
- History of BQ on the land or in the village — the spores persist
- Timing: warm wet season, freshly disturbed grazing ground

There is no feeding defence against BQ — the guidance is the calendar and the phone: annual vaccination of young stock (commonly given alongside HS timing) before the season, without skipping the well-grown ones, who are the disease's favourites. Feeding's role is indirect: since your best-fed young animals are the classic victims, good rearing makes vaccination MORE important, not less — never read a thriving heifer as a safe heifer. If a case strikes: isolate, call the doctor immediately (very early antibiotic treatment occasionally saves), vaccinate the rest urgently on advice, and follow the doctor's instructions on safe disposal — carcasses seed the soil for years, which is how farms become 'BQ farms'.
