Bloat in Cattle — Causes and Prevention

Updated 08 Jul 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

Bloat is a buildup of gas in the rumen that cannot escape normally, causing the left side of the animal to swell. It can develop quickly and, in severe cases, become life-threatening within hours — every dairy farmer should know how to recognize and prevent it.

Common Signs

  • Visible swelling on the left side of the abdomen (left flank)
  • Discomfort, kicking at the belly, or restlessness
  • Difficulty breathing in severe cases
  • Reduced or stopped rumination (cud chewing)
  • Animal going down and unable to rise in advanced bloat

Possible Causes

  • Sudden access to large amounts of lush, young legume or grass pasture
  • Rapid switch from dry fodder to wet, high-sugar green fodder
  • Fine-ground grain or concentrate fed in excess, producing a stable gas-trapping foam
  • Eating too fast on an empty stomach
  • Certain fodder types more prone to causing frothy bloat than others

What the Farmer Should Check

  • Was the animal moved onto rich pasture or given a large quantity of fresh green fodder suddenly?
  • Is dry fodder offered before turning animals onto lush grazing?
  • Is the left flank visibly swollen and firm or tight?
  • Is the animal still ruminating normally, or has cud-chewing stopped?

Feed Guidance

Prevention is far easier than treatment. Always offer dry fodder or straw before releasing animals onto lush green pasture or feeding a large quantity of fresh-cut grass — a fuller stomach of dry fibre reduces the risk of overeating rich, wet fodder too fast. Introduce any new pasture or green fodder gradually over several days, not all at once. Keep concentrate feed like GOKA Green or Star at the correct measured quantity rather than over-feeding. If you see left-flank swelling with distress, this is a veterinary emergency — severe bloat can be fatal within hours and needs immediate professional attention, not just feed adjustment.

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor

For serious symptoms, consult a qualified veterinary doctor. Feed support can help overall nutrition and recovery but should not replace veterinary treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bloat really an emergency?

Severe bloat can kill an animal within hours by restricting breathing and blood flow. Visible left-flank swelling with distress or breathing difficulty needs immediate veterinary attention — do not wait to see if it resolves on its own.

How can I prevent bloat when spring grass comes in?

Feed dry fodder or straw before releasing animals onto fresh spring pasture, and introduce grazing time gradually over several days rather than allowing unlimited access immediately.

Can compound feed like GOKA cause bloat?

Properly measured compound feed is not a typical bloat cause — bloat is far more commonly linked to lush green fodder or pasture. Feeding compound feed at the correct measured quantity, split across 2-3 feeds, further reduces any risk.
