Body Condition Score Guide for Dairy Animals

Body Condition Score (BCS) is a simple 1-to-5 scale for judging how thin or fat your animal is - and it is one of the most powerful free tools in dairy farming. The right BCS at the right stage means better milk, easier calving and faster rebreeding. You can learn to score your animals by eye and touch in minutes.
Common Signs
- BCS 1-2 (too thin): ribs, spine and hip bones sharply visible, no fat cover
- BCS 3 (ideal for milking): ribs felt with light pressure but not sharply visible
- BCS 3.5-3.75 (ideal at calving): smooth, well-covered frame
- BCS 4.5-5 (too fat): bones cannot be felt, blocky appearance
Possible Causes
- Low BCS: underfeeding relative to milk production, worms, poor quality fodder, illness
- High BCS: overfeeding in late lactation and dry period, low milk demand with rich feeding
What the Farmer Should Check
- Look and feel over the ribs, spine, hip bones and tail head
- Score animals monthly and note changes
- Target BCS: calving 3.5-3.75, peak milk not below 2.5, dry-off around 3.5
- Is thin + high milk happening together? That means underfeeding
Feed Guidance
