Brucellosis — Abortions in the Herd, Fever in the Family

When a cow aborts in the last third of pregnancy and the next one does too, brucellosis has to be ruled out — not only for the herd, but for the household. The same bacteria that cause the abortion infect people through raw milk and through handling the aborted calf and afterbirth with bare hands, causing a long, exhausting fever.

- Abortion at 6-9 months of pregnancy, often several animals within a season
- Retained placenta after the abortion or after a normal calving
- Weak calves born at term
- Swollen joints or swollen testicles in bulls
- Repeat breeding in previously fertile cows
- In people: recurring fever, sweats, joint pain and weakness for weeks
