Calf Growth Slow - Causes and Feeding Guide

Today's calf is tomorrow's cow. A calf that grows slowly becomes a late-calving, low-producing animal - the loss lasts a lifetime. With proper starter feeding, a calf can reach up to 200 kg by 5 months of age and be ready for breeding months earlier than traditionally raised calves.
Common Signs
- Calf looks smaller than others of the same age
- Pot belly with thin frame
- Rough, dull hair coat
- Calf licks soil, walls or other animals
- Frequent loose motion or weakness
Possible Causes
- No calf starter feed - milk alone after the first month is not enough
- Too early or sudden weaning
- Worm load (very common cause of pot belly)
- Poor quality colostrum feeding in first hours of life
- Dirty housing causing repeated illness
What the Farmer Should Check
- Did the calf get colostrum within 2 hours of birth?
- Is calf starter being offered from day 4 onwards?
- Is clean water available next to the feed?
- Is deworming done as per veterinary schedule?
- Is the calf shed dry and clean?
Feed Guidance
Start Goka Calf Starter from day 4 of age. Schedule: 3 days-1 month: 400 gm morning + 400 gm evening. 1-2 months: 800 gm + 800 gm. 2-3 months: 1 kg + 1 kg. 3-5 months: 1.5 kg + 1.5 kg. Early starter feeding develops the rumen (first stomach) faster, which means the calf can digest fodder earlier and grow faster. Soil-licking usually disappears once mineral-rich starter is fed. Always keep fresh water next to the feed.
