Calf Pneumonia — The Winter Shed's Most Expensive Cough

Updated 26 Aug 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

A coughing calf in a damp winter shed is a race against time — pneumonia scars young lungs, and a badly-affected calf may grow poorly for life even after 'recovery'. The disease is treated by doctors, but it is prevented by housing, colostrum and feeding — the farmer's territory.

Aam Alaamaat

  • Coughing, especially after moving or in morning cold
  • Fast or laboured breathing; in serious cases visible effort with each breath
  • Discharge from nose and dull, sunken eyes
  • Droopy ears, low head, calf standing apart with no play
  • Poor feeding — a calf that stops finishing its milk is announcing something

Mumkin Wajuhaat

  • Damp, ammonia-sharp, poorly ventilated calf corners — the number one shed cause
  • Cold drafts at calf level combined with wet bedding
  • Calves that missed proper colostrum fighting with borrowed time
  • Stress bundles: transport, weaning, overcrowding, sudden weather swings
  • Spread between calves housed nose-to-nose in shared damp air

Kisan Ko Kya Check Karna Chahiye

  • Kneel at calf level: does the air sting of ammonia? Is bedding damp?
  • Any draft moving across where the calves lie?
  • Did this calf get bohli within two hours of birth?
  • How many calves share the airspace, and are any others coughing?
  • Is breathing merely fast (count it) or visibly laboured?

Feed Guidance

Prevention lives in the calf corner: deep dry bedding changed before it dampens, fresh air without drafts (ventilated high, blocked low), calves never housed over or beside the dung channel where ammonia pools, and full colostrum in the first hours as the immune foundation. Feed is the second wall: milk feeds warm and on schedule, calf starter from day 4 building the growth and reserves that fight infection, clean water always. A sick calf still needs fuel — keep offering small warm milk feeds and fresh starter during treatment, in a warm dry pen, because starved lungs heal slowly. Treatment itself — antibiotics and more — is strictly the doctor's work, started early.

Laboured breathing, fever, refusal of milk or a visibly sick calf — call your veterinary doctor the same day. Early treatment protects the lungs; late treatment saves the calf but often not its full growth.

Aksar Pooche Jaane Wale Sawal

Why do calves in closed warm sheds still get pneumonia?

Because sealed sheds trap moisture and ammonia — the two things young lungs tolerate worst. Calves need warm-and-DRY with fresh air, not warm-and-stuffy.

My calf recovered but stays small - why?

Pneumonia can permanently scar developing lungs, capping oxygen and growth. That is exactly why prevention and same-day treatment matter more with calves than with adult illness.
