Cystic Ovaries — The Cow Always in Heat, or Never

A cow that comes into heat every few days, bellows, mounts the others and never settles is as frustrating as one that never shows heat at all — and both can have the same cause. A cyst on the ovary is a follicle that failed to release its egg and kept growing. It is common in high-yielding cows in the first months after calving, and it is a vet's diagnosis.

- Heat signs every 3-10 days instead of every 21
- Continuous restlessness, bellowing and mounting other cows (bull-like behaviour)
- Or the opposite: no heat at all for months after calving
- Relaxed ligaments on either side of the tail head, giving a sunken look
- Clear discharge at odd times
- Repeated inseminations that do not hold

- Keep a heat calendar: are the intervals wildly irregular or shorter than 18 days?
- Is she mounting other cows rather than standing to be mounted?
- How is her body condition since calving — losing fast?
- Is mineral mixture given every day?
- Has the vet done a rectal examination to feel the ovaries?

Cysts are largely an energy problem: a fresh cow milking off her own back fat does not cycle properly.
