The welfare arithmetic is simple: a few-weeks-old calf, local anaesthetic, minutes of skilled work, and a lifetime of hornless safety — versus adult dehorning's bleeding, sinus-opening hardship, or a lifetime of horn injuries. Have the veterinary doctor do it with pain control (hot-iron disbudding under local block is the common standard; caustic pastes demand exacting care to avoid burns to the dam's udder and penmates, so use them only exactly as the doctor directs). Around the procedure, feeding is the recovery meter: milk feeds continue normally, and a calf back to eager feeding within a day is a calf healing well; keep the pen dry, protect small wounds from flies in season, and give the buds' scabs the daily two-second glance until healed.
