Dry Period Management — Why the Last 2 Months Matter Most

Updated 08 Jul 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

The dry period — roughly the last 60 days before calving when a cow isn't being milked — is often treated as a rest period requiring little attention. In reality, how well this period is managed strongly predicts the next lactation's milk yield, fertility and calving ease.

عام علامات

  • Poor next-lactation milk yield despite a normal-looking dry period
  • Higher rates of transition problems (milk fever, ketosis, retained placenta) after calving
  • Over-conditioned or under-conditioned cows at calving
  • Inconsistent or minimal feeding during the dry period compared to lactation

ممکنہ وجوہات

  • Dry cows fed inadequately because they're "not producing milk" — a common but costly assumption
  • Over-feeding energy during the dry period, leading to over-conditioning
  • No transition feed used in the final weeks before calving
  • Udder tissue and body reserves not properly prepared for the next lactation's demands

کسان کو کیا دیکھنا چاہیے

  • Is the dry cow receiving a proper feed like GOKA Dry Feed, or largely left on fodder alone?
  • What is her body condition at the start and end of the dry period — stable, or notably changed?
  • Is a transition feed introduced in the final ~21 days before expected calving?
  • Is the dry period roughly 45-60 days — too short doesn't allow proper udder recovery, too long can lead to over-conditioning

فیڈ رہنمائی

Treat the dry period as active preparation, not a pause. Feed GOKA Dry Feed through the main dry period to maintain correct body condition and support udder tissue recovery between lactations. In the final ~21 days before expected calving, switch to GOKA Transition -21, which is specifically formulated to prepare the cow's metabolism for the demands of calving and the lactation ahead — this single change meaningfully reduces the risk of milk fever, ketosis and retained placenta. A well-managed 45-60 day dry period consistently pays back in the following lactation's milk yield and the cow's fertility for the next breeding cycle.

اکثر پوچھے گئے سوالات

How long should a cow's dry period be?

Roughly 45-60 days is the commonly recommended range — long enough for udder tissue to recover and prepare for the next lactation, but not so long that the cow becomes over-conditioned.

Why does the dry period affect the NEXT lactation's milk yield?

Udder tissue partially regenerates during the dry period, and this recovery directly affects the udder's milk-producing capacity in the lactation that follows. A poorly managed dry period limits this recovery.

Is it true that dry cows need less feed since they aren't milking?

They need different feed, not simply less. A proper dry-period ration like GOKA Dry Feed maintains correct body condition — underfeeding leads to poor next-lactation performance, while overfeeding leads to over-conditioning and transition problems.
