Goat Kid Pneumonia — Keeping the Nursery Breathing Through Cold Snaps

Kids are small boilers with big surface area — they chill fast, and chilled kids get pneumonia, the number-one killer in many goat nurseries. The disease needs the doctor; the conditions that invite it — damp floors, drafts, missed colostrum, weather whiplash — are all farmer territory.
Common Signs
- Coughing kids; rapid or laboured breathing with visible effort
- Nasal discharge, dull eyes, drooped ears and heads
- Standing humped and apart while penmates play
- Poor suckling — a kid off the udder/bottle is announcing trouble
- Worst hours often night and dawn cold; worst weeks, sudden weather swings
Possible Causes
- Chilling: wet bedding, floor drafts, rain-soaked kids, sudden cold snaps
- Ammonia and stuffiness in tightly closed night shelters — the sealed-shed trap at goat scale
- Colostrum-shorted kids fighting without armour
- Overcrowded nursery pens sharing every germ
- Stress stacking: weaning, transport, castration timed onto bad weather
What the Farmer Should Check
- Kneel in the kid pen: draft at floor level? Damp bedding? Ammonia sting?
- Did each kid get colostrum properly in its first hours?
- Breathing count and effort on any suspicious kid — and its temperature
- Crowding: how many kids share the airspace?
- Calendar: any stress-events scheduled onto cold spells that should move?
Feed Guidance
Build the nursery around dry-warm-aired: deep dry bedding topped daily, solid draft-blocking at kid level with ventilation ABOVE, rain-proof night shelter, and never a sealed stuffy box — goat kids need fresh air as much as warmth. Colostrum within the first hours is the immune wall; bottle it into any kid the doe shortchanges. Feed rhythm keeps the boiler stoked: milk feeds warm and punctual, creep feed available early so rumen development adds its own heat, clean water always. Sick kids: warm dry isolation, feeding continued patiently in small amounts, and the veterinary doctor promptly — kid pneumonia moves fast and early antibiotics save lungs and lives; late ones save neither well. Schedule stressors (weaning, moves) around weather, not around convenience.
