Hardware Disease — When a Swallowed Nail Becomes a Heart Problem

Cattle eat fast and sort little — a nail, wire piece or blade hidden in fodder goes straight down. Heavy metal objects settle in the second stomach, and each contraction can push a sharp point through its wall toward the heart. Farmers call the result many names; vets call it hardware disease, and prevention is entirely in your hands.

For an animal recovering after veterinary treatment, feed small, soft, easily digested meals — moistened chaffed fodder with modest compound feed — and avoid anything requiring hard rumen work until the doctor clears normal feeding.
