Horn Injuries — First Response When a Horn Cracks, Breaks or Bleeds

Horns catch — in ropes, gates, branches, and each other's fights — and a horn broken at its base bleeds impressively, because the horn's core is living bone rich with blood. Calm first response stops the loss; the doctor prevents the two follow-up problems: infection in the exposed core, and fly strike in the wound.

- Horn cracked, loose, hanging or torn off exposing the core
- Pain: head shyness, tossing, rubbing the head
- Later trouble: smell, discharge or maggots at a neglected horn wound

- Tetanus and infection risk — deep dirty wounds deserve the doctor's judgement

First response: stay calm and restrain gently — pressure stops horn bleeding, so press a clean thick cloth pad firmly over the break and hold it (minutes of patience beat repeated peeking); a figure-of-eight cloth tie around the horn base and other horn can hold the pad on. Don't pour irritants onto the exposed core. Then the doctor: a base break with exposed core needs proper dressing, infection protection and often trimming of the remnant — and in fly season an open horn core is a maggot invitation, so covering and treatment aren't optional. Prevention is housekeeping: fix the rope arrangements and manger gaps that catch horns, separate persistent fighters, and consider disbudding calves — the permanent, humane solution decided at calf age. Feed normally through recovery; a head-sore animal appreciates feed at easy height and a quiet trough spot.
