Lumpy Skin Disease — Feeding an Animal Through and After LSD

Lumpy skin disease swept through Indian cattle in recent years and remains a threat farmers know by name. It is a viral disease — vaccination and veterinary care lead the fight — but an LSD animal loses appetite for weeks, and whether it returns to production or wastes away is decided largely in the feed trough.

Feed Guidance
Vaccinate when your veterinary department runs the round — that is the real protection — and fight biting insects at home (drainage, dung management, evening smoke/repellent practices) to cut spread. For a sick animal, feeding is nursing: soft, palatable, easy meals — moistened chaffed green, wet bran mashes, softened compound feed — offered fresh in small amounts several times daily, because a feverish animal nibbles rather than dines. Lukewarm water always within reach; add a little salt/gud persuasion if drinking flags. If mouth sores hurt, make everything softer and wetter. Recovery feeding continues weeks after the fever: rebuild with steady fodder, measured compound feed and daily minerals until condition and yield climb back — animals abandoned nutritionally after LSD are the ones that 'never recovered'.
