Maggot Wounds (Fly Strike) — When a Small Wound Becomes a Colony

In fly season, any neglected wound — a rope gall, a horn nick, a tick sore, the navel of a calf — can be found by flies whose eggs hatch into flesh-eating maggots within a day. A maggot wound announces itself by smell and misery, deepens fast, and is entirely a disease of the unwatched wound. Daily inspection is the whole prevention.

Established maggot wounds need veterinary treatment — proper removal of maggots, cleaning, wound dressing and fly-repellent protection so it isn't restruck the same week, plus antibiotics where flesh damage is deep. Do not pour petrol, kerosene or harsh chemicals into wounds — old shortcuts that burn tissue and sometimes poison the animal; if the doctor is a day away, ask them by phone what safe interim application to use. Prevention is a daily two-minute rule in fly season: every wound found gets cleaned and covered/treated the same day, every animal gets the once-over, hindquarters are kept clean of caked dung, and the shed's fly-breeding war (dung, drainage) continues — fewer flies, fewer strikes. Wounded and recovering animals stay in the cleanest, driest, least-fly corner with normal feeding; healing flesh is built from protein and minerals, so a struck animal is another argument for the steady balanced ration.

Maggot wounds deserve veterinary cleaning and treatment — deep strikes are worse than they look from outside, and dairy animals need medicines chosen with milk safety in mind.
