Milk Leaking Between Milkings — The Dripping Udder Problem

Milk dripping or streaming from a teat while the cow simply stands is lost yield on the bedding — and worse, it means the teat's door doesn't close properly, leaving an open channel for mastitis germs around the clock. Some leaking is anatomy, some is management; all of it deserves attention.

Management shrinks most leaking: tighten the milking schedule so a heavy udder never sits overfull for long — equal 12-hour gaps for heavy milkers, and consider whether a very high yielder in flush needs an extra milking during her peak; milk the leaky animal early in the shed order once preparation sounds begin. Protect the open door: leaking quarters need the cleanest bedding in the shed, teat-dipping after milking if your vet recommends it, and standing time after milking so she isn't lying teat-down while wide open. Fix the causes you control — gentle full-hand technique, no more knuckling on that teat. A congenitally loose or badly scarred sphincter can't be fed or managed back to tight; discuss such teats with your doctor, and factor the trait when keeping her daughters.
