Navel Ill and Joint Ill — The Newborn Infection That Enters at Birth

Updated 26 Aug 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

The moist navel cord of a newborn is an open highway straight into the bloodstream. Germs from dirty calving floors climb it in the first days, causing navel infection that can seed into joints — the swollen-jointed, lame calf every old farmer recognises with a sigh. One cup of antiseptic and a clean floor prevent almost all of it.

Aam Alaamaat

  • Navel wet, thick, swollen or painful beyond the first days
  • Pus or foul smell at the navel stump
  • Dull calf, poor suckling, fever
  • Later and graver: hot swollen joints — knees, hocks — with lameness
  • Calf lying more than normal, reluctant to rise on painful joints

Mumkin Wajuhaat

  • Calving onto dirty, wet bedding or bare fouled floors
  • No navel antiseptic dip after birth
  • Hands and instruments handling the cord roughly or dirtily
  • Colostrum failure leaving the calf defenceless against what enters
  • Damp filthy calf pens keeping the stump wet and re-exposed for days

Kisan Ko Kya Check Karna Chahiye

  • Was the calving spot deep-bedded and dry, or bare and soiled?
  • Was the navel dipped in antiseptic soon after birth — and again next day?
  • Does the navel feel dry and shrivelling (good) or thick, moist, warm (bad)?
  • Did the calf receive proper bohli in the first two hours?
  • Any heat, swelling or pain in the calf's joints, or new lameness?

Feed Guidance

This is a hygiene-and-colostrum condition: prepare a clean, deeply bedded calving area before the due date; dip the fresh navel generously in tincture iodine (or your doctor's advised antiseptic) soon after birth and repeat a day later; keep the calf's pen dry so the stump can shrivel cleanly. Colostrum within two hours is the internal armour — a calf full of bohli resists what a deprived calf cannot. There is no feed treatment for an established navel or joint infection: that is antibiotic territory, started early by the doctor, because once infection settles in joints, lameness can persist for life. Your part afterwards is nursing — warm dry bedding, milk on schedule, starter feed available — while treatment works.

Aksar Pooche Jaane Wale Sawal

Is dipping the navel really necessary if the shed looks clean?

Yes — no working shed floor is germ-free, and the navel is a direct route to the blood. The dip costs seconds and rupees; joint ill costs calves.

Why do the JOINTS swell from a navel problem?

Germs entering the navel travel in the bloodstream and settle where blood flow is slow and tissue is welcoming — young joints. That is why a neglected navel shows up later as lameness.
