Overgrown Hooves — The Slow Lameness Nobody Notices Starting

Updated 26 Aug 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

Hoof horn grows all life long, and a stall-kept animal on soft bedding wears almost none of it away. Slowly the toes lengthen, the angles tilt, the legs load wrongly — and one day the household notices 'she walks funny'. Overgrowth is the most gradual lameness there is, and the most routinely fixable.

عام علامات

  • Visibly long toes, turning up like slipper tips in advanced cases
  • Heels sinking low as the angle tilts backward
  • Altered stance and gait: weight rocked back, short careful steps
  • Reluctance to walk, stand or mount; more lying than usual
  • Uneven wear and cracks appearing in the distorted horn

ممکنہ وجوہات

  • Continuous stall-keeping on soft bedding — no natural wear
  • Soft wet flooring wearing nothing while softening horn
  • Rich steady feeding growing horn faster than village grazing ever did
  • No trimming routine — growth simply compounding season on season
  • Individual and breed tendencies; some feet overgrow faster

کسان کو کیا دیکھنا چاہیے

  • Look at toe length and hoof angle on every animal — squat down and actually look
  • Compare walking now vs her normal: stride length, willingness
  • Horn condition: cracks, splits, packed muck in distorted clefts
  • How much daily walking on firm ground does she actually get?
  • When was trimming last done, if ever?

فیڈ رہنمائی

The fix is scheduled hoof trimming by someone skilled — your veterinary doctor or an experienced hoof trimmer — typically checked once or twice a year for stall-kept animals, with correction as needed; never attempt aggressive corrective cutting untrained, since over-trimming lames faster than overgrowth (the classic guidance: trim little, level, and stop before pink). Give feet honest work between trims: daily walking on firm dry ground wears horn the way nature intended and doubles as heat-detection time. Keep standing areas dry — wet horn is soft horn that distorts faster. Feed-wise, hoof horn is built from protein and minerals over months: steady balanced feeding with daily mineral mixture (zinc again earns its mention) grows tough, sound horn, while feast-famine feeding writes its history into horn rings and weakness.

A markedly lame animal, feet with deep cracks, or any discharge and smell needs the veterinary doctor — overgrowth is routine, but pain means something more is going on underneath.

اکثر پوچھے گئے سوالات

Our village animals never needed trimming - why do mine?

Village animals walked kilometres daily on hard ground, self-trimming as they went. A well-fed stall animal grows horn faster and wears it slower — the comfort that boosts her milk also retires her natural hoof file.

Can I trim hooves myself with a knife?

Small tidying of obvious flaps is one thing; real corrective trimming needs skill, proper tools and restraint — cutting wrong angles or into the quick lames the animal you meant to help. Watch a skilled trimmer work before ever trying more than the basics.
