The Premature or Weak-Born Calf — Small, Early, and Fightable-For

A calf born early or simply born feeble — undersized, slow to rise, weak to suck — starts life with every margin thinner: less fat, less strength, less reserve. The first three days decide most of these stories, and the deciding tools are warmth, bohli patience, and small frequent feeding.

- Small, thin calf with silky sparse coat and soft hooves (the premature look)
- Slow to lift head, attempt standing, or find the udder
- Weak suckle on a clean offered finger; tires mid-feed
- Sleeps excessively; must be woken to feed
- Struggles to hold body heat — cold mouth, shivering or worse, limpness
Mumkin Wajuhaat
- Early calving from any trigger — illness, stress, twins crowding the womb
- Poor late-pregnancy nutrition writing itself into calf reserves
- Twins commonly born smaller and earlier
- Difficult prolonged calvings exhausting a normal-term calf into weakness
- Sometimes simply the draw — one weak calf in a run of strong ones

- Mouth warmth and shivering status — the hypothermia check comes first
- Has bohli gone in — how much, how, and how soon after birth?

- Daily trend: stronger each day, or flat — the third-day answer usually tells
Feed Guidance
Fight on three fronts: WARMTH — deep dry bedding, draft-free corner, dried coat, because a weak calf loses the heat battle before the milk battle; BOHLI — within two hours regardless of standing ability, bottle-fed in small patient amounts if the suck is weak (a weak calf needs colostrum MORE, and small-frequent beats large-rare); then FEEDING RHYTHM — smaller, more frequent warm milk feeds than a normal calf, every few hours in the early days, waking it to feed rather than admiring its sleep. Hygiene discipline doubles for these calves — navel dipped, utensils scalded — since their infection defences are the thinnest part of them. Expect slower growth and start calf starter on schedule anyway; many weak-born calves, carried through their first week, close most of the gap by month three.
