Rumen Acidosis in Dairy Cattle — Causes and Prevention

Updated 08 Jul 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

Rumen acidosis happens when rapidly-fermenting feed drops rumen pH too low for the rumen's normal microbes to function well. Sub-acute (mild, ongoing) acidosis is especially common and easy to miss, quietly reducing milk yield, fat percentage and hoof health over time.

Aam Alaamaat

  • Reduced or inconsistent feed intake
  • Loose, frothy or inconsistent dung
  • Drop in milk fat percentage
  • Reduced rumination (cud chewing) time
  • Associated lameness or laminitis over time in chronic cases

Mumkin Wajuhaat

  • Too much rapidly-fermentable concentrate relative to fibre in the ration
  • Large single concentrate meals instead of split feeding
  • Sudden feed changes without a gradual transition
  • Insufficient effective fibre (long-stem dry fodder) in the overall diet
  • Over-processed or very finely ground concentrate feed

Kisan Ko Kya Check Karna Chahiye

  • Is concentrate feed split into 2-3 meals a day, or fed as one large portion?
  • Is there enough dry fodder or straw in the ration relative to concentrate?
  • Was a recent feed change made gradually, or all at once?
  • Is the animal ruminating (chewing cud) normally between meals?

Feed Guidance

Prevention centers on feeding pattern as much as feed choice: split concentrate into at least 2, ideally 3, feeds through the day rather than one large portion, which keeps rumen pH more stable. Maintain adequate dry fodder or straw in the ration — fibre supports normal chewing and saliva production, which naturally buffers rumen pH. Make any feed or brand change gradually over 7-10 days rather than switching abruptly. GOKA feeds are formulated for balanced fermentation when fed correctly at the right split quantities — most acidosis problems trace back to feeding pattern rather than the feed itself. Persistent signs despite correct feeding pattern warrant veterinary consultation.

For serious symptoms, consult a qualified veterinary doctor. Feed support can help overall nutrition and recovery but should not replace veterinary treatment.

What is the difference between acute and sub-acute rumen acidosis?

Acute acidosis is a severe, sudden drop in rumen pH, often from a major feeding error, and can be a medical emergency. Sub-acute acidosis is a milder, ongoing condition that is easier to miss but still quietly reduces production and can contribute to lameness over time.

Why does splitting concentrate into multiple feeds help prevent acidosis?

A large single concentrate meal causes a bigger, faster rumen pH drop than the same total amount split across 2-3 feeds, giving the rumen time to buffer and stabilize between feedings.

Can rumen acidosis affect milk fat?

Yes — acidosis alters rumen fermentation patterns in a way that commonly reduces milk fat percentage, alongside reduced intake and potential hoof health effects over time.
