Silage and Rainy Season Feeding Guide

The rainy season brings lush fodder - and hidden dangers. Wet, mold-prone fodder, sudden diet changes and muddy sheds cause digestive upsets, milk drops and mastitis. Silage, done right, turns the season's surplus into months of quality feed. Here is how to feed safely through the wet months.
Common Signs
- Loose dung after feeding fresh wet grass
- Milk fat percentage dropping in the rainy season
- Feed refusal due to moldy smell in stored fodder
- More mastitis cases from muddy, wet bedding
Possible Causes
- Very wet young grass passes through the rumen too fast - less fiber digestion, less milk fat
- Mold growing on wet stored fodder produces toxins
- Sudden switch from dry to lush fodder upsets rumen microbes
- Wet bedding and mud increase udder infection risk
What the Farmer Should Check
- Is fresh-cut grass wilted for a few hours before feeding?
- Is stored fodder dry and mold-free? Smell it - never feed anything musty
- Is dry fodder or straw mixed with lush grass to maintain fiber?
- Is bedding kept dry to protect udder health?
- Is silage properly compacted and sealed, with no black or foul-smelling patches?
Feed Guidance
Balance is everything in the rainy season. Mix dry fodder or straw with lush green grass to keep fiber up and protect milk fat. Make any diet change over 7-10 days.
