Silent Heat in Buffaloes — Catching the Heat That Hides

Updated 11 Oct 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

Ask around any village and the complaint is the same: the buffalo does not come into heat. Most of the time she does — quietly, briefly, and at two in the morning. Buffaloes show far weaker heat signs than cows, which is why so many are called infertile when the real problem is that nobody saw it.

Common Signs

  • Heat signs are mild: slight restlessness, a few bellows, a thin clear mucus string from the vulva
  • Standing still when another animal rests her chin on the rump
  • Swollen, slightly reddened vulva for a day
  • Frequent urination in small amounts
  • Drop in milk for a milking or two
  • Most activity between late evening and early morning, especially in warm months

Possible Causes

  • Buffalo heat naturally lasts a shorter time and is less dramatic than cow heat
  • Heat concentrated at night when nobody is watching
  • Summer heat suppressing both the signs and the cycle itself
  • Tied animals with no herd mates to mount or be mounted
  • Poor body condition and mineral shortage making already weak heat even weaker

What the Farmer Should Check

  • Watch for 20 minutes at dawn, dusk and late night, not just at milking
  • Look for the mucus string on the tail and thighs in the morning
  • Keep a calendar: note anything unusual every day and look for a 21-day pattern
  • Untie animals together for a while so mounting behaviour can show
  • Is mineral mixture fed daily, and is she in good body condition?

Feed Guidance

A buffalo in poor condition cycles weakly or not at all, so the feeding foundation comes first: a buffalo-specific feed like GOKA Buff 5000 matched to her milk, with daily mineral mixture and salt. In the lead-up to breeding, steady or slightly rising body condition encourages clear heat. Green fodder helps through its beta-carotene; in winter a complete compound feed covers the gap. Feed does not make a buffalo show stronger heat overnight, but a well-fed, cycling buffalo gives the watcher something to see.

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor

If a buffalo shows no heat for 3 months after calving despite careful watching, have a veterinary doctor examine her — true anestrus, cysts or a uterine infection need treatment, and the vet can also help with timed breeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time of day should I watch?

Early morning before milking and late evening after it are the two best windows; in hot months much heat behaviour happens overnight. Mucus on the tail at dawn is often the only trace.

Does a tied buffalo show heat?

Barely. Letting animals loose together for an hour morning and evening lets mounting and standing behaviour appear — it is the most reliable sign you have.
