Subclinical Mastitis — The Milk Loss You Cannot See
Updated 05 Oct 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor
عام علامات
- Milk looks normal but the daily total slides without a clear reason
- One quarter always a little less full than the others at milking
- Milk fat or SNF slipping at the dairy counter with no feed change
- Repeated mild clinical mastitis in the same quarter every few months
- A paddle test (California Mastitis Test) shows thickening in one or more cups
ممکنہ وجوہات
- Bacteria sitting inside the quarter at a low level after an earlier infection that was never fully cleared
- Teat ends roughened by rough milking, wet weather or cold, letting germs in between milkings
- Milking order: an infected cow milked before healthy ones spreads it through hands and cloths
- Incomplete milk-out leaving milk behind where bacteria multiply
- Mineral and vitamin gaps (selenium, vitamin E, zinc) lowering the udder's own defence
کسان کو کیا دیکھنا چاہیے
- Strip the first squirts from each quarter into a dark strip cup every day — any flakes at all?
- Do a paddle test monthly: equal milk and reagent in each cup, swirl, watch for gel in 10 seconds
- Is each cow milked out completely, with the infected or suspected cow always milked last?
- Are teat ends smooth, or cracked and rough?
- Is mineral mixture fed daily, and is the dry-period routine followed between lactations?

A positive paddle test in a quarter, or the same quarter flaring repeatedly, needs a veterinary doctor: a milk culture and the right dry-period treatment clear it. Guesswork antibiotics make the next infection harder.
