Three-Day Sickness (Ephemeral Fever) — Dramatic, Brief, and Mostly Survivable

Updated 26 Aug 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

Few diseases frighten a household like a good cow suddenly down, stiff and shivering — and few resolve as kindly as three-day sickness usually does. This insect-borne viral fever typically runs its dramatic course in about three days, and the farmer's job is calm nursing: water, shade, soft feed, and protecting the down animal from the complications of lying.

عام علامات

  • Sudden high fever with shivering and heavy dullness
  • Marked stiffness or lameness — shifting between legs, reluctance to move
  • A sharp milk crash for the duration
  • Watery eyes and nose, drooling; appetite gone
  • Some animals go down and lie like milk-fever cases for a day or two

ممکنہ وجوہات

  • A virus transmitted by biting insects — mosquitoes and midges
  • Warm, humid insect seasons bringing area-wide waves of cases
  • No animal-to-animal spread by contact — the insect is the courier
  • High-producing animals often showing the loudest signs
  • One attack generally leaving useful immunity

کسان کو کیا دیکھنا چاہیے

  • Season and pattern: are scattered animals in the area going down with brief fevers?
  • Can the animal rise with encouragement, or is she fully down?
  • Hydration and rumen: is she drinking anything, chewing at all?
  • For a down animal: bedding depth, and is she being turned side to side?
  • Any signs beyond the pattern — down beyond a couple of days, bloat, worsening — that break the 'three-day' script

فیڈ رہنمائی

Nursing is the treatment the farmer owns: rest in shade with deep dry bedding, lukewarm water always within neck's reach (a feverish stiff animal won't walk for it), and soft tempting feed in small fresh offerings — moist green, wet bran mash, softened compound feed — accepting that a fevered day or two of poor eating will pass. For a down animal, the real dangers are secondary: turn her from one side to the other several times daily, keep her propped chest-up on bedding, and never leave her flat on one side for long — the doctor's anti-inflammatory treatment plus this simple turning is what brings most through unscarred. Rebuild feeding to normal over the week after the fever breaks, and expect milk to climb back gradually rather than overnight.

Call the veterinary doctor for any down animal — treatment eases the course, and milk-fever (a calcium emergency) can look similar and must not be missed. Down beyond two-three days, bloating while flat, or worsening signs need urgent re-examination.

اکثر پوچھے گئے سوالات

How is this different from milk fever?

Both can put a cow down — but three-day sickness runs a high fever with stiffness in any animal in insect season, while milk fever strikes around calving with a cold-skinned, low-temperature collapse. Because the treatments differ completely, the doctor should see any down cow.

Milk crashed during the fever - will it return?

Mostly yes, climbing back over one to two weeks with good nursing and feeding — though a heavy case mid-lactation may leave the rest of that lactation a little below its old line.
