Tick Fever (Red Urine) — When a Tick Bite Becomes a Blood Emergency

Ticks are more than blood thieves — they inject parasites that destroy red blood cells from within. The disease farmers know by its most dramatic sign — red or coffee-coloured urine — moves fast, hits good crossbred animals hardest, and turns on hours, not days. Knowing the picture in advance saves animals.
Common Signs
- High fever with dullness and dropped appetite
- Red, dark or coffee-coloured urine — the emergency flag
- Pale-to-yellowish gums and eyes as blood is destroyed
- Rapid breathing and weakness; the animal tires on a short walk
- History or presence of tick load on the animal or in the shed
Possible Causes
- Blood parasites transmitted through the bites of infected ticks
- Heavy tick seasons and tick-infested sheds raising exposure
- Crossbred and high-producing animals typically more susceptible than local hardy stock
- Newly purchased animals meeting local tick strains without immunity
- Stress lowering resistance ahead of an outbreak
What the Farmer Should Check
- Urine colour — catch a sample; dark or red urine plus fever is the alarm bell
- Gum and eye colour: pale or yellow?
- Tick load now: ears, tail base, udder, dewlap
- Any recent animal purchases or moves into a new tick area?
- Temperature — this disease runs genuinely high fevers
Feed Guidance
Treatment is entirely veterinary — specific injectable medicines work well when started early, which is why the farmer's real job is speed: fever plus dark urine equals a same-day call, not a wait-and-watch. Prevention is tick war on both fronts: regular animal checks and vet-guided acaricide treatment, plus shed crack-sealing, bedding hygiene and yard scrub control so the tick cycle breaks at home. Nutrition is the recovery wing: the disease burns red blood cells, so convalescents need steady rebuilding — good fodder, measured compound feed, daily minerals (blood rebuilding leans on trace minerals) and easy access to water and shade while strength returns over the following weeks. New purchases deserve quarantine, tick-clearing and gentle introduction for exactly this reason.
