Udder Edema Before Calving — Feed Management

Some swelling of the udder before calving is normal, but excessive udder edema (fluid swelling) can cause discomfort, make milking difficult once the calf arrives, and is more common in certain feeding and management situations.

- Excessive, tight, pitting swelling of the udder in the weeks before calving
- Swelling extending forward along the belly, not just the udder itself
- Discomfort or reluctance to walk normally due to udder tightness
- Difficulty milking cleanly in the days immediately after calving due to swelling

Feed Guidance
Feed a balanced transition diet like GOKA Transition -21 in the final weeks before calving rather than an excessively salt-heavy ration, and avoid over-conditioning through late pregnancy by feeding GOKA Dry Feed at the correct measured quantity. Some gentle daily movement or exercise, where practical, supports normal circulation and can reduce fluid buildup. Mild udder edema before calving usually resolves on its own within days after calving as milking begins; edema that is severe, doesn't improve after calving, or is accompanied by other concerning signs should be checked by a veterinarian.
