Underweight Dairy Cows — Causes and Feed-Based Recovery

Updated 08 Jul 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

A thin, underweight dairy cow is milking off her own body reserves — a situation that cannot continue indefinitely without consequences for her health, fertility and future milk production. Recovery requires a deliberate, gradual feeding correction, not just "more feed."

Common Signs

  • Visible rib, hip and spine definition with little fat covering
  • Steadily declining body condition score over recent weeks or months
  • Reduced milk yield accompanying the weight loss
  • Poor coat condition and general dullness

Possible Causes

  • Underfeeding relative to milk yield — concentrate quantity not matching actual production
  • High-yielding cows in early lactation naturally mobilizing body reserves faster than intake can replace
  • Competing health issues (parasites, dental problems, illness) reducing intake or nutrient absorption
  • Poor-quality fodder providing insufficient energy even at adequate quantity

What the Farmer Should Check

  • Is concentrate feed quantity actually matched to the cow's real milk yield?
  • Has milk yield increased recently without a corresponding feed increase?
  • Are there other possible causes — parasites, dental issues, underlying illness — that should be ruled out?
  • Is fodder quality reasonable, or old/low-energy despite adequate quantity?

Feed Guidance

Recovery starts with correcting the energy gap gradually — increase concentrate feed toward the correct 1 kg per 2.5 litres of milk plus 1 kg maintenance guideline, introduced over 7-10 days rather than all at once to avoid digestive upset. GOKA Amrit or Gold 10000+ are energy-dense options well suited to supporting recovery in a thin, higher-yielding cow, alongside good-quality fodder. If weight loss continues despite adequate, correctly increased feeding, rule out non-nutritional causes like internal parasites or dental problems with your veterinarian, since these can undermine even a well-designed feeding correction.

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor

For serious symptoms, consult a qualified veterinary doctor. Feed support can help overall nutrition and recovery but should not replace veterinary treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I just feed a thin cow a lot more concentrate immediately?

Increase gradually over 7-10 days rather than a sudden large jump, which can cause digestive upset or acidosis. Steady, correctly-paced increases toward the target quantity work better than an abrupt change.

Why do high-yielding cows lose weight even when eating well?

In early lactation, milk production demand often outpaces what even a good appetite can physically consume, so the body draws on fat reserves temporarily. This is normal to a point, but should stabilize and reverse as lactation progresses with correct feeding.

What if a cow keeps losing weight despite increased feed?

This is a signal to look beyond nutrition — internal parasites, dental problems or underlying illness can all prevent weight recovery even with correct feeding, and need veterinary evaluation.
